A red milkweed beetle poses quite prettily for the camera. They remind me of small dogs, like chihuahuas.
Like their name implies, the red milkweed beetle spends most of its life hanging around on milkweed plants, eating the leaves and meeting up with other beetles. The red milkweed beetle lives for just one summer, but there can be several generations a year, and the large population of the little red beetle across North America means that a red milkweed beetle will always be able to make some friends!
Also, if they feel unsafe, red milkweed beetles will try to hide in curled-up milkweed leaves and underneath the stems of the milkweed’s flowers. I think that’s pretty cute.
